Isla Mujeres

Description

Isla Mujeres, only seven km long and a kilometer wide, is a laid-back provincial island, half Caribbean and half Mexican. Here nobody's in a rush, everybody knows everybody, and foreigners are welcome . Since the late 50s, the island has been a destination in its own right and visitors measure their stays in weeks, not days. Playa Norte has the best beaches. Downtown Isla is a cluster of shops, informal restaurants, cafés, and bars where the strains of reggae, salsa, rock, jazz and romantic ballads can be heard.
In spite of its reduced size the island is full of things to see and do. Isla's narrow streets are full of shops stocking beachweare and handicrafts from all over Mexico; look for pottery, woodcarvings, Panama hats, hammock and the famous gold and silver jewelry created by local jewelers. Visit the Ruins of the Treasury Mundaca, the National Sub Aquatic Park of Garrafon and explore the many extraordinary reefs. The novice, intermediate or advanced divers will be able to delight themself with the great variety of multicolored fishes that inhabit the waters of this island.
