La Moneda Cubana

Situated up a narrow staircase at the entrance of Plaza de la Cathedral, the location is exceptional. Back in the 1930’s, the building was a famous food and liquor store owned by Don Ramón, an Asturian who arrived in Cuba in the early 20th century. Here he fell in love and married a Cuban girl. Around that same time, he founded the family business of food stores, all of which were located in Old Havana

Cafe del Oriente

The Café del Oriente is about as upmarket as it gets in Old Havana. Almost self-consciously grand, it is located right on Plaza de San Francisco and seems to challenge its neighbours to do better. This is a place to take someone who is easily impressed with classic poshness.

San Cristobal

San Cristóbal was knocking out fine food long before the leader of the free world dropped by in March 2016, although the publicity garnered from President Obama's visit probably helped. Crammed into one of Centro Habana's grubbier streets, the restaurant has a museum-worthy interior crowded with old photos, animal skins, and a Santería altar flanked by pictures of Maceo and Martí.

The style of the place is thoroughly Mediterranean, located on the second and third floors of a building that must be 200 years old and seems to be made of wood and stone there is a comfortable airy feel to the restaurant. La Divina Pastora

La Divina Pastora has a wonderful setting behind huge 18th-century cannons, offering a great view back over the harbour into Old Havana. Unfortunately, that is about it. The food here struggles to reach mediocre. Lobster, fish, steak, pork are all bland and boring and don’t get me started on the salad. A shame since the location is great.

Club Habana

This restaurant is located in the Club Havana Residences in Miramar, Havana on the 5th Ave. Between Calle 188-192. Club Havana, as it’s called now, used to be the old Biltmore Yacht and Country Club, which was big in the 50’s. Today the apartments have been turned into residences for foreigners and the complex, which includes pools, a gym and a strip of beach, is open to the public for a $1500 annual fee or $20 per visit.

Rio Mar

Since the opening in February 2012, Rio Mar has gone straight to the top of most expatriate pop charts for dining options. This is on account of not just the fabulous location but also, attentive service, fabulous food and an attention to minimalist elegant décor. You can sit inside but outside of the really sweltering summer months it is the terrace that draws you in. Bear in mind for the summer months you may feel the heat inside, they could do with some more ceiling fans for the central tables.

El Aljibe

El Aljibe, which features a 62-year-old secret recipe for roast chicken that has drawn the likes of Hollywood star Jack Nicholson and former President Jimmy Carter. This is a great place for Creole food, as well as the chicken and the rice, which are excellent, and the French fries and fresh bread to complement. While there is other stuff on the menu, the as-much-as-you-can-eat El Aljibe chicken, CUC 12, is what you go there for.

La Cecilia

This is an immensely popular place on a Friday and Saturday night for its concerts and nightlife. As a restaurant, this has been around forever and markets itself as a high-class place serving international food. Perhaps this is true but I have never met anyone who lives in Havana who has ever really willingly chosen to go to dinner there. Best to eat somewhere else and come back here at midnight.

La Cocina de Lilliam

La Cocina de Lilliam is set in the gardens of a beautiful villa in Miramar. This is right at the top of the list of many visitors’ dream list. It is easy to see why with the romantic, artfully lit garden full of greenery and splashing fountains many miles away from the typical Cuban dining experience. Indeed, after President Jimmy Carter’s visit here on May 13, 2002, this place started to promote itself with the slogan “Feel like the president for a night.”

Habana Blue

A unique place when it comes to its concept. The mansion in Vedado occupied by this place recreats the atmosphere of the movie "Habana Blues", where among the city, the blue and the music you can enjoy an especial meal and be surprised by an actor or actress that while serving your food, recites a monologue, a poem, a fragment of a play or a song.
